Town Manager’s Recommended 2017-2018 Budget Highlights Community Investment

The Wickenburg Town Council took its first step toward adopting its fiscal year 2017-2018 budget by reviewing the Town Manager’s recommended budget at a special budget session on Monday evening, April 10, 2017.

The Wickenburg Town Council took its first step toward adopting its fiscal year 2017-2018 budget by reviewing the Town Manager’s recommended budget at a special budget session on Monday evening, April 10, 2017.

This year’s budget includes a continued focus on public service and investment in the community. Some highlights of the budget include:

  • Maintains a balanced budget with revenues projected to exceed expenditures
  • Maintains a healthy reserve of 20% of new revenues in the General Fund, which is above the Council's adopted minimum of 15%
  • Proposes no new taxes and keeps flat the current sales and property tax rates
  • Pays off early one of two loans on a voter-approved wastewater plant expansion, thereby reducing the Town's debt repayment schedule from 29 years remaining to 5 years until Town is debt free. This is the Town's only source of significant debt
  • Fully funds the next year of the Town's adopted Pavement Preservation Plan to maintain local streets
  • Makes a significant investment in parks and public spaces, including a new playground at Sunset Park, safety and electrical improvements at the Hassayampa River Walk, and constructing Barbara Brown Park
  • Continues major investment in downtown revitalization, including streetscape enhancements to North Washington and South Frontier streets and land acquisition for future parking expansion
  • Includes citizen participatory budgeting that invites local citizens to vote on a capital project that will be determined during the year. Wickenburg will be the first city in Arizona, and one of only a handful nationally, to offer this type of citizen budget involvement

The Town Council will consider adopting the tentative budget for fiscal year 2017-2018 at its regularly scheduled meeting on May 1, 2017. A final budget will be adopted during a public meeting on June 5, 2017 prior to the fiscal year start of July 1, 2017. Town Council meetings are held at Town Hall, 155 N. Tegner Street, and the public is always encouraged to attend.
